When did Adam die?

Posted by faithfirstmedia on July 3, 2009 at 4:27 PM

The following is an excerpt from the book Does the Bible Have Contradictions? by Matthew Elton, copyright 2009 Matthew Elton.

Question:

Did Adam die the same day he sinned (Genesis 2:17) or did he continue to live to the age of 930 years (Genesis 5:5)?

Answer:

Adam lived to be 930 years old. Genesis 2:17 says that Adam would die if he ate the apple. But it never says when he would die. Adam did indeed die after he ate the apple. He died several centuries later, when he was 930 years old.

2 Peter 3:8 states that to God "a day is a thousand years" and "a thousand years is a day". When God said Adam would die that day, He literally meant that his lifespan would be limited to 1,000 years or less. Notice that many of the antediluvian patriarchs lived to be over 900 years old, but none made it to 1,000. There is a reason for this, and that is that God put a 1,000 year limit on the human lifespan. After the flood, the lifespan of man crashed, presumably due to changes in the earth's atmosphere, and the resulting genetic damage degraded man's lifespan even further, until it was about 70 years long by the time of Kind David.
